Hollands Day
The RDH Auctions sponsored National Twinshock Championships reached the half way stage when the Cumbria Twinshock Club hosted round four at Bassenthwaite, north of Keswick. The circuit looked a treat when riders arrived on the Saturday, but with only an overnight shower the track needed watering to dampen the dust before start of practice.
As usual first to the line was the MD Racing Over 50’s and 60’s, and after six months off the bike local rider Pete Lightfoot got the holeshot and led the first lap, until a fall let both Andy Holland and Martin Snape through to finish one-two, with Chris Barker in third. In race two the lead swapped several times as first Snape led before being passed by Brian Littler on lap two, then Snape regained the lead only to relinquish it to Holland who took the flag for his second win. Snape led the third race all the way until on the last lap Holland squeezed through to complete his hatrick, from Snape, Littler and Lightfoot.
In the Over 60’s Jack McEwan rode three flawless wins to take the overall, and it was good to see ex Yorkshire Centre Champion Geoff Stokes back from France taking second overall from series leader Maurice Wharton in third.
In the Wulfsport Experts there were some great battles, and none more so than in race one as Alex Rach battled with Pete Mathia, who showed their class to stay ahead of Wayne Butt, Howard Standfield and Gary Parker. In race two Rach had a poor start, unlike Butt who stormed away with Simon Gower in tow. Butt and Gower finished a fine one-two with Rach coming through to third at the flag from Standfield and Mathia. With it all to play for in race three Butt again got the holeshot from Rach, Gower and Roy Wells, but Rach found his way past on lap two to take the spoils from Butt by just three points. Standfield on the new S1 Maico took third overall.
In the Toughsheet Recycling 125’s John Davis seemed to get the bit between his teeth as he took the first from series leader Sean McCrea with Richard Chinn in third. It was McCrea who hit back in race two, with victory from Richard Chinn and Lloyd Griffiths, after Davis fell and finished a lowly seventh. Race three saw Davis take his second win from Chinn and McCrea. But it was McCreas day by three points from Davis and Chinn who had to be split by the best race three result.
The Falcon Shocks 250 class were up next and Mick Armstrong led the way taking race one from a hard charging Tom Holland and John Littler. Holland took race two from Tim Mills who had his best result of the season as did Pat Winter in third. Race three saw Holland at the front once more and he duly rounded off the day by taking the overall with his second victory from Armstrong and Steve Shambrook.
The CI Sport Intermediate class had a massive thirty rider line up, and first out of the gate in race one was Jem Parker on Garys C&J Honda, who led until lap three when Nigel Sowerby found a way past to take the win from Richard Allen and Parker. Allen led race two until the final lap when Sowerby came from nowhere to ghost past and take his second win, with Llanellis Dan Evans in third. Graeme Clegg led race three until Sowerby came through to claim a clean sweep from Allen and Clegg at the flag. Chris Woodward finished top six all day to take the final podium position.
Fot the first time this season Gary Parker didn’t have it all his own way in the Cheshire County Crossers Veterans class as Steve Ward did what he has been threatening to do all year by taking the overall. Parker took the first race from Ward, Lee Davies and Mick Armstrong. But Wards two stroke power paid dividends taking race two from Parker and Phil Daley. In the final encounter Parker struck trouble on the start straight and had to come from dead last to fifth at the flag. Up at the front Ward sailed to victory from Alan Eaves and Robert Dobson.
There was another good line up in the LPE Clubman class as Lloyd Griffiths took the first race from Martin Barker after early leader Ben Margetson hit trouble. Gav Lowes took third on one of Bill Browns bikes in race one, but made no mistakes in the next two by flying to victory and the overall from Griffiths by a single point. Stuart Hodder took third overall and with it the CNR Burrows Transport Rider of the Day trophy to take on his long journey home to the South West.
The final class of the day was the Motolink Yamaha Evolution class, and all the top riders bar Richard Chinn seemed to have one bad result. In race one Roy Wells led from start to finish from Chinn and Michael Smith. In the second Wells again dominated from Paul Coward on his Kwacker with Chinn third. Then in the final skirmish Coward came home victorious from Smith and Chinn. The end result meant only four points separated the top four with Chinn, Wells, Coward and Smith taking the silverware.
The next round of the championship is a two day affair at Warmingham Lane, Sandbach on
July 17/18.
